Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Burger Recipe for Home Cooks

Make Air fryer crispy chicken burger with clear steps, pantry staples, and flexible swaps.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp hot sauce optional
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs or panko
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise or your favorite sauce
  • 4 burger buns
  • Lettuce tomato, and any other desired toppings

Method

  1. Pound the chicken breasts to an even 1/2-inch thickness for uniform cooking. Cut the chicken in half if it's too large for your buns.
  2. In a bowl, mix the buttermilk and hot sauce (if using). Add the chicken pieces to the bowl and ensure they are fully submerged. Let them marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well to create the coating.
  4. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes.
  5. Remove the chicken from the buttermilk mixture, letting any excess drip off. Dredge each piece in the flour and breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to adhere the coating evenly.
  6. Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Place the coated chicken pieces in a single layer in the basket, making sure they do not touch.
  7. Spray the tops of the chicken with a light coating of cooking spray to encourage browning. Cook for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the chicken is golden brown and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
  8. While the chicken cooks, prepare your burger buns and toppings. Toast the buns lightly if desired.
  9. Once cooked, assemble your burgers by spreading mayonnaise on the buns and adding the crispy chicken, lettuce, tomato, and any other toppings you prefer.
