Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Parmigiana Recipe

Make Air fryer chicken parmigiana with clear steps, pantry staples, and flexible swaps.

Ingredients

  • 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts (about 1 pound total)
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup marinara sauce
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese for topping

Method

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 380°F (193°C).
  2. Pound the chicken breasts to an even thickness of about 1/2 inch for uniform cooking.
  3. Set up a breading station: Place the flour in one shallow dish, beat the egg in a second dish, and combine the breadcrumbs, 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper in a third dish.
  4. Dredge each chicken breast in flour, shaking off the excess, then dip into the beaten egg, and finally coat with the breadcrumb mixture. Press the breadcrumbs onto the chicken to ensure an even coating.
  5. Spray the air fryer basket lightly with cooking spray. Place the breaded chicken breasts in a single layer in the basket, making sure they do not overlap.
  6. Air fry the chicken for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, flip the chicken and continue cooking for another 5 minutes, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) and is golden brown.
  7. Once the chicken is cooked, remove it from the air fryer and spoon marinara sauce over each piece. Top with shredded mozzarella and the remaining 2 tbsp of grated Parmesan cheese.
  8. Return the chicken to the air fryer and cook for an additional 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Carefully remove the chicken parmigiana from the air fryer and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
