Decadent Vegan Brownies for Every Occasion

Make Vegan Brownies with clear steps, pantry staples, and flexible swaps.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar or coconut sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/3 cup melted coconut oil or vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup non-dairy milk such as almond or oat milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup vegan chocolate chips optional

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8x8-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the unsweetened applesauce, melted coconut oil, non-dairy milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can lead to denser brownies.
  5. If you choose to add vegan chocolate chips, fold them into the batter at this stage.
  6. Pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly. Tap the pan gently on the counter to release any air bubbles.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean with a few moist crumbs attached.
  8. Remove from the oven and let the brownies cool in the pan for at least 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Once cooled, cut into squares and enjoy your delicious vegan brownies!
