Delicious Homemade Chicken Chow Mein Recipe

Make Homemade Chicken Chow Mein with clear steps, pantry staples, and flexible swaps.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb boneless skinless chicken breasts, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup shredded cabbage
  • 1 cup bean sprouts
  • 1 bell pepper sliced
  • 2 green onions chopped
  • 8 oz chow mein noodles or thin egg noodles, cooked and drained

Method

  1. In a bowl, combine the sliced chicken with 1 tbsp soy sauce, cornstarch, and 1 tsp sesame oil. Mix well and let marinate for 10–15 minutes.
  2. While the chicken is marinating, prepare the sauce by whisking together the remaining soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, and 1 tsp sesame oil in a small bowl. Set aside.
  3. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the marinated chicken and stir-fry until the chicken is cooked through and no longer pink, about 5–7 minutes. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the minced garlic, and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Add the shredded cabbage, sliced bell pepper, and bean sprouts to the skillet. Stir-fry the vegetables for 3–4 minutes until they are tender but still crisp.
  6. Return the cooked chicken to the skillet with the vegetables. Pour the prepared sauce over the chicken and veggies, stirring to combine. Cook for an additional 2–3 minutes to heat through.
  7. Add the cooked chow mein noodles to the skillet, tossing everything together until the noodles are evenly coated in the sauce and heated through, about 2 minutes.
  8. Garnish with chopped green onions before serving.
