Savoring Char Siu Chicken at Home

Make Char Siu Chicken with clear steps, pantry staples, and flexible swaps.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb chicken thighs boneless and skinless
  • 3 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger grated
  • 1 tsp Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp green onions chopped for garnish
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds for garnish

Method

  1. In a bowl, combine hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, minced garlic, grated ginger, five-spice powder, and sesame oil. Whisk until well blended.
  2. Place the chicken thighs in a resealable plastic bag or a shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the chicken, ensuring all pieces are evenly coated. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight for maximum flavor.
  3. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil for easy cleanup.
  4. Remove the chicken from the marinade, reserving the marinade for later. Place the chicken thighs on the prepared baking sheet, spaced apart.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 25–30 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (75°C). Halfway through cooking, baste the chicken with the reserved marinade for extra flavor.
  6. Once cooked, remove the chicken from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes. This helps retain the juices.
  7. Slice the chicken into strips and arrange on a serving platter. Drizzle with any remaining marinade and garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds. Serve immediately.
